I am a full professor of psychology at UMass Boston, director of the clinical psychology doctoral program, and a behavioral scientist at Fenway Health. My professional work integrates a dual focus on mental health (especially depression and alcohol/drug use) and health-behaviors (medication adherence, engagement with care, sexual risk behaviors), usually focused on the U.S. HIV epidemic and sexual and gender minority identity-based discrimination. I am trained strongly in the CBT/DBT tradition, so take a present focus while acknowledging the importance of our unique histories in directing our behavior today. I have significant experience working clinically with people who are struggling with whether or not they want to change and, if so, how best to do it. I provide support and empathic understanding when that's needed, and problem solving and skills coaching when that's needed.
